Planets describe what is happening
The Sun concerns identity and vitality, the Moon emotion and instinct, Mercury perception and communication, Venus values and relating, and Mars desire and action. The outer planets describe slower collective and personal processes depending on their chart position.
A planet remains the same function wherever it appears, but its expression changes through sign, house, and aspect.
Signs describe how it happens
Signs provide elemental temperament and modal movement. Mars in Aries and Mars in Taurus both describe assertion and desire, but one tends to initiate directly while the other builds force through continuity.
A sign is not a life area. Saying that Scorpio equals the eighth house or Aries equals the first house erases important differences among planets, signs, and houses.
Houses describe where it happens
Houses organize the chart into fields such as identity, resources, communication, home, creativity, work, partnership, shared resources, belief, vocation, community, and the inner life.
A house does not have one universal sign attached to it. Its cusp sign and ruler depend on the actual chart and chosen house system.
