What the ascendant measures
The ascendant is the intersection of the eastern horizon with the ecliptic at a specific moment and location. It is not assigned from a calendar date. It must be calculated from local sidereal time, geographic coordinates, and the geometry of the horizon.
The twelve signs do not rise at identical speeds at every latitude, so the common phrase that the rising sign changes every two hours is only an average.
Why birth time matters
A difference of minutes changes the ascendant degree. Near a sign boundary, it can change the sign itself. The same error also shifts house cusps and can move planets near cusps into neighboring houses.
Use the most reliable recorded time available. If the time is approximate, treat the ascendant and houses as provisional rather than presenting them as exact.
Why calculators sometimes disagree
Differences can come from incorrect timezone handling, daylight-saving rules, historical timezone databases, location coordinates, zodiac choice, or a simple data-entry mistake. House systems can change house cusps, but they should not change the calculated ascendant when all other inputs are identical.
When results disagree, check the entered date format, birthplace, UTC offset, and whether the calculator uses tropical or sidereal longitude.
What to do without a birth time
You can still calculate most planetary sign placements from the birth date, although the Moon may change signs during the day. Do not guess a rising sign from appearance or personality. Birth-time rectification is a specialized interpretive process and is not equivalent to retrieving a documented time.
